Dua Lipa has officially been granted Kosovo citizenship, a deeply personal milestone that the singer says has completed a long-held sense of identity and belonging.

The ceremony took place in Kosovo, where Dua was warmly welcomed by President Vjosa Osmani, fans, and a children’s choir singing her global hit Levitating.

In an emotional statement, the London-born pop sensation said: "It completes the duality I have always had within. I love this country and this means so much to me and my family."

Dua, who was born in 1995 to Albanian-Kosovan parents in the UK, now holds triple citizenship – Britain, Albania, and now Kosovo.

President Osmani praised Dua Lipa as ‘one of the most iconic cultural figures in our country’s history’.

It was “an honour” to grant her Kosovan citizenship, she said as she shared pictures of the ceremony on X (formerly Twitter).

“Dua and Kosovo have always been inseparable. From the world’s biggest stages to the hearts of millions, she’s carried our story with strength, pride, and grace… Our gratitude is endless for everything Dua has done, and continues to do for Kosovo.”

Images from the event show a smiling Dua Lipa standing alongside President Osmani and her father Dukagjin Lipa, who is also her business partner in organizing the Sunny Hill Festival, a three-day annual music festival held in Kosovo that aims to promote local talent and boost the country’s global image.

The ceremony also included heartwarming moments of Dua greeting fans and receiving flowers and gifts, further reflecting the singer’s close bond with her heritage.

Dua’s connection to Kosovo runs deep. She has frequently spoken about her Kosovan-Albanian roots, and has used her global platform to advocate for the region, especially through her Sunny Hill Foundation, a charity focused on supporting youth and vulnerable communities in Kosovo.

This isn’t the first time Dua has been honoured for her cultural influence. In 2022, she was granted Albanian citizenship by President Bajram Begaj for her role in promoting Albania’s image internationally through music.

The pop star’s journey from posting covers on YouTube at the age of 14 to becoming a Grammy Award-winning global artist has been nothing short of remarkable. Her debut album was released in 2017, followed by her critically acclaimed second album Future Nostalgia, which helped cement her place in international pop stardom.

Dua’s success story stands in contrast to another British-Kosovan singer, Rita Ora, who was born in Kosovo but does not currently hold Kosovan citizenship. Rita and her family fled Kosovo in the early 1990s due to political unrest and later settled in the UK. For Dua Lipa, however, Kosovo has remained a central part of her identity.
